Weekend Musical Diversion: Mavis Staples and Jeff Tweedy

October 10, 2010

You might be familiar with Mavis Staples from her work with the amazing gospel/soul group, The Staples Singers and Jeff Tweedy from indie band Wilco. They have collaborated on a new album (not an affiliate link) and one of the results is a cover tune of Creedence Clearwater Revival. This is a stripped-down acoustic version and I love every moment of this song. It makes me want to drag out my acoustic and get practicing. Thanks to my friend Chuck for turning me onto this song…I hope you enjoy and have a great weekend!

I absolutely LOVE this song, too!! I was unsure as it started out (for about five seconds!)…and then it just was such a joy to listen to. Thanks so much for sharing this, and for the introduction to these two artists working together!

Hi Tim,
I agree with Lance, this was such a joy to listen to.
I loved, at the end, where Ms. Staples simply looked over to Mr. Tweedy, nodded and smiled — and he smiled back. That really says it all. Thanks for this. _/|_ (~namaste)

Hi Lance: Glad you liked the tune, it really struck a chord (pardon my guitar pun) with me…so simple – and these two musicians doing what they do best. I know this song is on Mavis Staples’ new album, but this acoustic version, as far as I know, isn’t on there. Lance, thanks for sharing your thoughts and have a great week!

Hi Lori: I was up late in the night last night listening to the radio last night and heard the late night personalities talk about Mavis…turns out she’s 71. Wow, she looks incredible! The moment you mention is priceless to me – you can really feel the mutual respect the two musicians have for each other. I’m glad you enjoyed the tune and I hope you have a great week!
