Happy St. Patrick’s Day

March 17, 2011

I had chance to watch Chicago’s annual dying of the river last weekend. And while the crowd that witnessed this was mostly college students and young adults who probably started drinking their green beer early that morning, I overheard a thirty-something gentleman say that he traveled from southern California to watch our river turn bright green.

When I witness this annual event, I can’t help thinking of this great classic rock song or get thirsty for a Green River soda. I also can’t help becoming slightly irritated that this event brings out plenty of “amateurs.”

But St. Patrick’s Day also reminds me of the promise of spring, when after months of cloudy, cold weather, we begin to see green. A time of renewal.

No, I am not Irish, but today I am. Today I appreciate all the symbolism behind the shamrock. For some it may stand for the Holy Trinity, for others it may stand for faith, hope and love. Still others might think of Guinness, Harps and Jameson.

Whatever your beliefs, let St. Patrick’s Day be a day of gratitude and thankfulness. Let it be a day when you can be of service to others. Let it be a day when the warmth of spring melts the coldness that my exist in your heart.
